Barks Comics to be re-published!

Carl Barks is one of the greatest storytellers of the past 100 years. The creator of Scrooge McDuck, Gladstone Gander, and everything else "Duck" that we love about Disney, he told hundreds upon hundreds of wonderful stories and adventures through his fantastic comic books. I am the proud owner of about 25 of these comic books, but that is nothing compared to his entire canon of work. Every story is so funny and thoroughly entertaining. He worked very hard to make each character unique, as well as make every story very different and engaging. Carl Barks was definitely a true master of Duck Comics.

That is why I was ecstatic to find out that, starting this fall, all of his comics are being republished, in hard cover anthologies! Read all of the details here, and be sure to pre-order yours as soon as they're available! Many Disney fans aren't privy to the treasure trove that was the collection of Carl Barks' work--if you aren't aware of it, become aware! They are really, really great and special things to read.

Marvel to Disney transfer complete (Or is it?)

It was just announced that Paramount has transferred the worldwide rights to two of its Marvel properties, The Avengers and the Iron Man franchise, to Walt Disney Studios for at least $115 million.

When the Mouse bought Marvel a while back, I was wondering how this was going to work out, and I'm still curious. Now it's obvious that Disney will get the lion's share of the box office, including their cherished merchandising and theme park rights. However, who is going to be paying the millions of dollars it takes to produce the films? Marvel Studios (a.k.a. Disney)? Jon Favreau's production studio? Did Disney pay $115 million to get the movies after they were in the can and have no say in what happens during production? It's all very confusing.

It's also worth mentioning that Paramount still owns the rights to Thor and Captain America, Sony owns the rights to Spider-Man, and other Marvel properties have been sprinkled throughout Hollywood over the years. This means that Disney won't get to distribute these films, but will still retain their merchandising, etc.

Don't feel too sorry for Paramount, though, because they still have tons of tentpole franchises they've yet to milk completely dry: Mission: Impossible, Jackass, Transformers, Star Trek, Paranormal Activity, and G.I. Joe.

It may all be very difficult to understand, but the bottom line is that Disney will be distributing The Avengers in 2012, and Iron Man 3 in 2013, which means they'll be basking in the glory of billions at the box office. I'm glad that they're making all of this Marvel-ownership business slightly less confusing, but it is also starting to look like Disney will soon have a monopoly on the entertainment industry...

Oh well. As long as they keep giving Pixar their creative autonomy and don't destroy Pirates of the Caribbean at Disneyland, I'll stay a happy camper.

For a more detailed account of the deal and a little clearing up as far as studio logistics go, check out Variety.

Spider-Man has a new Webb

Marc Webb (directed (500) Days of Summer) is a great director, but I don't know if he's right for his next gig. Sony has just announced that Webb will be at the head of a completely new Spider-Man reboot. This new trilogy will have completely different storylines and actors and everything else compared to the popular trilogy featuring Tobey and Kirsten.

This is very exciting news. I love Spider-Man, but did not like where the last trilogy was taking it. Although I never pictured him as a superhero director, I'm very interested to see what Marc Webb, a lighthearted and character-driven director, will do with Peter Parker.

An unconfirmed rumor that's been going around recently is that Robert Pattinson of the Twilight series will star as our friend Peter Parker. Let us hope that this is not the case. (What I'd like to see is Joseph Gordon-Levitt taking over as the webmaster. That would be great.)

Marc Webb is all that's known for now about the new trilogy, but I'll keep you up-to-date as more news surfaces.

'Up' in FoxTrot

Briefly: I love FoxTrot. It is one of my favorite comics that I can still find in the Sunday paper. The strips are always original and very funny. I love all of the characters. Anyways, Amend has, in his most recent strip, not only mentioned Pixar's Up, but he based the entire strip on it. Read it above.

Funny, funny stuff.

Mutts Comic Genius Featured in 'Art of Up'

I have always loved comic strips. They are usually well-drawn and funny, and there are very few strips that beat out Mutts by Patrick McDonnell. Well, it turns out that creating hilarious situations for Earl and Mooch isn't all McDonnell is talented at; he is featured in The Art of Up!

He is also credited as a 'Development Artist', and Docter had this to say about the genius behind Mutts: "Patrick’s work has a wonderful charm, a great sense of character, and a deceptively simple complexity to it. He seemed a perfect fit for Up, and sure enough he came up with some great ideas."

Very cool! The folks at Pixar have good taste in artists! But we already knew that... But now we know that McDonnell has a good taste in animation studios, I suppose. Let's hope that Mutts stays as funny and brilliant as they are today. Let's also hope that Pixar's films stay as wonderful and perfect as they are right now. But I am sure that we don't have to worry about either of these artistic staples' quality to linger anytime soon.

Free Pixar Comic!

Briefly: Everybody's favorite holiday is coming up. . . That's right! May 2nd is Free Comic Book Day! This is the 8th year of free comics books, and Disney, as usual, is contributing. But this year, instead of their usual Donald Duck or Mickey Mouse comic, they are sending out something from Emeryville.

Cars #1 from BOOM! Studios (pictured at the top of this post) will be one of many comics that will be available at any participating retailer for free on May 2. From the official Free Comic Book website, here's the comic's synopsis:

Take a peek under the hood of BOOM! Studios' line of Cars comics, based on the hit Disney/Pixar movie! This issue includes an exciting excerpt from Cars #1, revealing the plucky origin of Lightning McQueen! In addition, readers will be treated to never-before-seen sketches, character designs and script pages!

The Cars comic is listed as one of their 10 "Gold Comics" for this year, making Pixar, as usual, the best of the best.

I can't wait to get my free Pixar comic!

Oh, and, by the way, you can download a 5 page preview of the comic right now!
