'Toy Story 3' Link Round-up: Featurettes, Storyboards, the Screenplay, Interviews, and more!

The Toy Story 3 Blu-ray has been officially released, and I'm planning to watch the complete trilogy back-to-back-to-back this weekend. It's gonna be awesome.

Anyways, to coincide with the release of the Blu-ray and DVD, Disney has released a few things online for our viewing pleasure.

The first is this set of previews, letting you in on what you'll get to see within the Bonus Features section of the Blu-ray.

Next up is a set of storyboards from the "Thrown Away" sequence in Toy Story 3. They are huge images, and slightly cleaner than I'd have expected storyboard drawings to be. Still, they get the action across effectively, and obviously did their job well:

NPR's Fresh Air conducted a wonderful interview with Lee Unkrich and Michael Arndt here. It's definitely worth a listen--if you wondered why you cried at the end of the movie (twice), this will satisfy your curiosity. They talk about everything from advances in technology, to the infamous story retreats, to how Lee thinks of his animators as his actors. Give it a listen if you've got the time. You'll enjoy it. I promise.

Also check out Ned Beatty's (voice of Lotso) recent interview with Hollywood.com here.

I also thought I'd mention this article published in the LA Times yesterday. It predicted a victory for the Conservatives at this year's midterm elections, based purely on the popularity of Toy Story 3. While I think that this theory is completely absurd, it's an entertaining op-ed piece.

Finally, Walt Disney Animation Studios has released the complete Toy Story 3 screenplay, written by Michael Arndt, for your reading enjoyment here. It is located on their "Awards" site, which also indicates the other categories that they hope Toy Story 3 will be nominated for. These include Best Original Song for Randy Newman, Best Director for Lee Unkrich, and Best Picture for Darla K. Anderson. See the complete list of potential nominations here.

I'm calling it right now: Toy Story 3 will be the first animated movie to ever win Best Picture at the Oscars. Maybe I'm just being blindly optimistic, but that's how I see it playing out. It really is the most critically-acclaimed and the highest-grossing film of the year. It deserves Best Picture.

I loved Toy Story 3, and am now the proud owner of the complete trilogy on Blu-ray. I'm planning on watching every Toy Story, as well as every special feature, this Friday night. And I can hardly wait.

Next stop: Awards Season!

The Toy Story Trilogy Box Set

Sure, I might already have the Toy Story and Toy Story 2 DVDs. Yeah, I can find the majority of the featurettes from almost any Blu-ray online. Nevertheless, I have already pre-ordered the 10-disc Toy Story trilogy Blu-ray+DVD combo pack. And I recommend you do the same.

It just went up for pre-order on Amazon.com at $69.99, with a list price of $100. Not much is known about the set yet, but I'm sure it will be jam-packed with all kinds of great featurettes that cater to the tastes of folks just like you and me--folks who love Pixar.

The set will be released on the same day as Toy Story 3, November 2 this year.

TS3, Cars Toons Coming Home Nov. 2

Briefly: Amazon.com has just put up their pre-order pages for the Toy Story 3 and Cars Toons DVDs and Blu-rays. They are all set to come out on November 2 later this year.

For Toy Story 3, there are currently 3 announced versions: a basic 1-disc edition, the 2-disc Blu-ray version, and the ultimate 4-disc combo pack with everything (including a digital copy). I like the 2-disc Blu-ray cover the best, but will definitely go for the full 4-disc set.

In addition to this release, Cars Toons: Mater's Tall Tales is also coming out as a Blu-ray+DVD combo pack this November. The set will include nine Cars Toons, including two never-before-seen shorts, Mater Private Eye and Moon Mater. I'll definitely be ordering this one, too.

'Finding Nemo' Blu-ray on the Way?

Amazon.co.uk has a product page for the Finding Nemo Blu-ray. It has a list price of $38.81 and a shipping date of May 1, 2010. There has been no official announcement from Walt Disney Studios Home Entertainment regarding a Finding Nemo Blu-ray. Judging by the product page, I'm guessing that this is simply a false alarm.

'Snow White' Coming on Blu-ray

Briefly: Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, the first full-length animated feature by Walt Disney, and the first movie to sell one million DVDs in a single day, will be released on Blu-ray on October 6. The Blu-ray will be released as a combo pack with a DVD of the movie, and will cost around $39.99. Oddly enough, the 2-disc DVD will not be released until November 24, seven weeks after the Blu-ray is released. This is the first time that Snow White will be available for purchase since 2001! (Note: The above Blu-ray is a mock-up made by me; the cover art for the release has not yet been released)

Win 'Bolt' on Blu-ray!!

I finally received my review copy of Bolt (the day before its released, no less). I am very excited about this release. It is the first movie from Walt Disney Animation Studios that John Lasseter worked extensively on. This is one reason why I believe the movie was so great, but also was so similar to Toy Story (read my full review of Bolt here).

Anyways, the Blu-ray is really great. It is a 3-disc set of two Blu-rays featuring the film and its features and a digital copy of the film, which are paired with a normal DVD which only has the movie on it. This is in line with Disney's newest generous gift (however selfish it may seem to be when you think about it) of offering a DVD of each film coupled with its Blu-ray release in an effort to boost the more expensive disc format's sales.

First off, let me say that the quality, as usual with Blu-ray, is stunning. The picture and sound quality truly blew me away. Now on to the exciting features!

The best feature, in my opinion, is the new short Super Rhino, featuring, yep, you guessed it: Rhino the Hamster! It is a very good short; although I am not surprised due to Lasseter's apparent brilliancy with past animated shorts...

Other features include deleted scenes, several different perspectives of the making of the movie, a music video, games, an art gallery, and more!

Other formats of Bolt being offered are: a 2-disc edition with most of the features mentioned above, although some of the last ones listed are Blu-ray only, and a single-disc DVD release featuring a couple of special features (including Super Rhino!!)

Well, now that you are all excited to get the new Bolt Blu-ray, I am going to give you a chance to get it right now!!

To win a copy of the 3-disc Bolt Blu-ray being released tomorrow on March 22, just leave a comment below on or before March 26. You can comment about Bolt, John Lasseter, Walt Disney, or your favorite type of lasagna. Any comment will do, but please only enter once. (In order to comment you must register with Blogger so that I can have your e-mail information in order to contact you if you are the winner!)

Estimated prize value=$39.99. No purchase necessary to enter. Legal residents of the 50 United States may enter. Entrants under age 18 must have a parent or legal guardian's permission to enter. Limit one online entry per person or email address per day per internet location. Contest Sponsors and their dependants are not eligible to win. Winners will be drawn at random and mailed their prize. If I do not get a reply from said winner within 24 hours of my contacting them, I will select another winner.

Any questions? Good. Now get commenting!

'Monsters, Inc.' Blu-ray Lacks Release Date [UPDATED]

This is very shocking news. Monsters, Inc. on Blu-ray, which was set to be released on May 19 of this year, has been pushed back to an unknown date. All retailers have stopped accepting payments for pre-orders, and it seems like months of promotion including inserts and promos in the new Pinocchio and Bolt Blu-rays, have gone down the tubes.

There isn't much more to say; the A Bug's Life Blu-ray release is still on schedule for release on May 19 of this year, but for some strange reason, Monsters, Inc. remains to have a release date, but there is much speculation that this release could be holding off an entire year until May 2010.

Shocking.

Update: Blu-ray.com is reporting that "Monster's Inc. has been delayed until November, likely to coincide with the Blu-ray release of Up."

Tuesday Link Roundup

Disney fans are quite overwhelmed with news today due to the announcement of D23, as well as other news which has arisen from either Pixar, Disney's shareholder's meeting, or who knows where else. Here is a comprehensive list of the day's important, Disney-filled news:

  • The official synopsis of Partly Cloudy, the short preceding Pixar's newest feature Up, has been released by Pixar. Read it on Upcoming Pixar here.
  • The release date for Disney's upcoming feature The Princess and the Frog has been brought back from Christmas Day to December 11 in order to avoid competition with an Alvin and the Chipmunks sequel. AWN has a great article talking about these reasons behind pulling the release date of The Princess and the Frog, which is Disney's first movie in about 10 years which centers around a princess and is 2D, both of these attributes, as you know, are very similar to classic Disney films.
  • Bob Iger announced today something that is making theme park execs shake in their boots, if they haven't shaken 'em off already.
  • The big news of the day is D23. Read my coverage of this new "Official Club for Disney Fans", or visit the official site.
  • Bob Iger also announced the names of Disney's two new cruise liners. They are "Fantasy" and "Dream". Read all about it at The Disney Blog.
  • Other news covered today by myself includes my review of the new Pinocchio DVD and Blu-ray Discs, and the launch of Up: The Video Game's site.
That was the first 'Link Roundup' for Disney, etc.! I hope you enjoyed it, and I'll be sure to do more of them when the day's Disney news gets unbearably cumbersome to read and comprehend.

Pinocchio: 70th Anniversary Platinum Edition on DVD and Blu-ray

Disney's Pinocchio is a childhood classic that is based on the timeless book by Carlo Collodi. Today, Disney is celebrating the 70th anniversary of Pinocchio, and, to celebrate, they are releasing Pinocchio: 70th Anniversary Platinum Edition on DVD and Blu-ray!

DVD

The DVD's aspect ratio is full screen, as most classic Disney animated films are. It has a new sound mix which is in Dolby Digital 5.1, as well as French and Spanish audio tracks. The movie's image and sound quality is digitally restored, and looks and sounds beautiful.

Disc One includes, of course, the movie, as well as trivia, sing-along bonus features, and audio commentary by several notable historians from the film industry, including Leonard Maltin. Disc Two is loaded with great special features. Disc Two is a documentary, No Strings Attached: The Making of Pinocchio. But this is much more than a simple documentary; it includes footage from the production of the film, an alternate ending, a couple of never-before-seen deleted scenes, a featurette about Walt Disney and his "sweatbox" procedure, games, songs, and more! The second disc is very, very enjoyable, especially if you enjoy Pinocchio and Disney history.

Blu-ray

The Blu-ray edition of Pinocchio: 70th Anniversary Platinum Edition includes all of the above features dispersed among two Blu-ray discs which are in the beautiful hi-def format, as well as a normal DVD copy of the movie. This extra third disc doesn't include any features, which can all be found on the two Blu-ray discs. All Disney Blu-ray releases from now on will include this supplementary third disc that's playable in normal DVD players in an effort to boost Blu-ray disc purchases.

Pinocchio is one of my favorite Disney classics, and Disney doesn't disappoint with this DVD/Blu-ray release. The features are wholesome and wonderful, the video and audio are both beautifully redone without sacrificing anything from the original movie, the third disc is a very nice touch, and, as always, the Blu-ray format is very crisp and clear and makes for an even more fierce Monstro. I recommend getting the DVD or Blu-ray, as it will make a very nice addition to your DVD (or Disney) collection. Below you will find several videos that come from the DVD and its many bonus features (videos are from the DVD, but were originally posted at The Disney Blog):

"Transitions of Pinocchio"

"Rotoscoping"

"Sweatbox"

Extras for these two films will include all the features on the previous DVD releases, including the following Blu-ray exclusive extras:

    A Bug's Life

UPDATE: TheHDRoom has the not-yet-finalized covers for these movies (although these are sure to be close to the final product). They also state that:
Monster's Inc. and A Bug's Life will each be presented in their original aspect ratios (2.35:1 for Bugs, 1.85:1 for Monster's) in 1080p video with 5.1 DTS-HD Master Audio packaged with an embossed foil O-sleeve. Both releases will also share a digital copy, BD-Live access, ported DVD bonus features and an all-new bonus feature: Filmmakers' Roundtable.

Briefly: During a presentation put on by Sony at CES, they showed the capabilities and the new features of Blu-ray players, and Pixar got a moment to speak.
